In Memory Of

about

“In Memory Of” is a song not only written before coming out as queer but as a song they wish they would've heard growing up. “In Memory Of” bridges the gap between emo-laden lyrics and textural synth-rock along with WOLFJAY's contemplative sensibilities. It’s a song about removing yourself from a toxic environment, changing lanes before the warning signs derail you off the road, and knowing what you need to do to get to that place you can really want to call home. Blending imaginative synths, cathartic guitars, and WOLFJAY's passionate lyrics and vocals, the pursuit for personal freedom driven by emotional mayhem feels all too real on “In Memory Of.”

In their own words, WOLFJAY says this of the new single:

“‘In Memory Of’ is about the pressure and tension felt when leaving behind old things and moving forward. It’s about letting the past die, killing it - if you have to, because it’s the only way to become who you were meant to be. It’s about acknowledging the process and despite it being painful and hard, sticking with it and seeing it through.”

lyrics

I hear the wolves coming,
Coming closer,
But they’ll never get close to me,
Cos I’ve been running,
Longer than the river,
No, they’ll never get close to me.

And I heard you calling out to me
When I just wanted to be alone,
Cos you only came running
when you realised I was gone,
But I left a long, long time ago,
I was sick of the neglect,
And now I’ve learnt to hunt and hide,
and fend for myself

And there’s only heartache when I think
Of the years I spent with you,
All my happy memories,
I’m hating,
Do what you need
to find your peace,
But leave me out of it
I don’t care what you think of me,
After this

I’ll pass you in the street,
Pretend I don’t recognise your face
anymore, anymore, anymore
Remember the man you thought I was,
And realise it was a lie,
All along, All along, all along

I hear the wolves coming,
Coming closer,
But they’ll never get close to me,
Cos I’ve been running,
Longer than the river,
No, they’ll never get close to me.
